Abstract

Starting with limited resources, at a time when engineering technology was still in its early phases, Victorian engineers displayed enterprise and initiative in developing the State's potentialities. This paper describes their work in equipping the gold mines, the construction of railway rolling stock, the construction of agricultural implements, development of water supplies, among other aspects of the engineering industry. Many of the firms concerned are mentioned and their activities detailed.
