- Abstract
Timber bridges have become a ubiquitous and characteristic part of Victoria's cultural landscape, but this distinctive heritage is now increasingly under threat from changing transport systems. With funding from the Australian Heritage Commission, VicRoads and the Public Transport Corporation, the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) commenced, in late 1993, a typological study of Victorian timber bridges. The Trust set itself the ambitious task of identifying all surviving historic timber bridges throughout the State and then selecting the best and most representative examples for nomination to the Australian and Victorian Heritage Resisters. An extensive historical overview of timber bridges has been prepared, and an electronic data-base of over 2000 bridges has been prepared. We will investigate making the data-base available on the World Wide Web. The Trust also hopes, in conjunction with other interested bodies, to develop some general guidelines which will assist in the preservation of timber bridges. The study has now almost reached completion.
