- Description
Papers published by Australian chemists in the 1860s, and previously featured in this series, concerned gold (Parts 4 and 5, July 2010 issue, p.18; August 2010 issue, p. 12), spectrum analysis (Parts 6 and 7, November 2010, p.24; December 2010, p. 32) and eucalyptus oil (Parts 8 and 9, July 2011, p. 28; September 2011, p. 24). The present article explores the early background, and the consequences, of a paper published in Melbourne in 1866 by Charles Ligar on the preparation of picric acid from Xanthorrhoea resin, a natural product that first attracted interest in Sydney Cove in 1788, and became known as Botany Bay resin (Ligar 1866).
