Summary

David Boyd was a geophysicist who was recognised internationally as an expert in the use of aerial magnetic surveys for geological mapping. For 13 years he conducted surveys in many parts of the world for London-based geological consulting firms, during which time he developed pioneering and widely-used methodologies for integrating aeromagnetics with geology. In 1969 Boyd became Professor of Geophysics at the University of Adelaide. As President of the Geological Society of Australia he advocated a revival of geological mapping in Australia. He contributed to innovations made by the South Australian Government in aerial surveys, which resulted in increased exploration and provided a model for data gathering by government bodies.
