Summary

Gavan McCarthy, who became an expert in social and cultural informatics, was, in 1985, the first member of staff of the Australian Science Archives Project in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Melbourne. ASAP, as it was known, became part of the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre (Austehc) when it was established in 1999. In 2007 Austehc transferred to the University Library and was renamed the eScholarship Research Centre. It was closed at the end of June 2020. In 2013 McCarthy was promoted to Associate Professor. He is known internationally for his innovative approach to archival description and contextual information management. In 2021 he joined the Centre for Transformative Innovation at Swinburne University of Technology as an honorary research fellow and resumed his role as Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Australian Science and Innovation.
