Summary

Len Samuels, worked for the Materials Research Laboratories 1943-1983. He studied the processes of metal removal during the actions of abrasion, cutting and polishing and the deformation associated with conventional hardness testing. He built an internationally recognised expertise as an optical microscopist and metallographer, and his lasting major publications include: "Metallographic Polishing by Mechanical Methods" 43 editions 1967-2010; "Optical microscopy of carbon steels" 14 editions 1980-1992 and "Light Microscopy of Carbon Steels" 18 editions 1999-2003.
