Summary

Joseph Maiden was one of Australia's most distinguished taxonomic botanists. He was acknowledged as an authority on the genera Acacia and Eucalyptus. His research interests covered broadly the whole Australian flora, particularly that of New South Wales, and plants of economic importance. A prolific writer, he published many articles in the journals of learned societies and the Agricultural gazette of New South Wales. His major books included A census of New South Wales plants (1916, written with Ernest Betche); and the illustrated works The forest flora of New South Wales (published in eight volumes 1903 - 1924) and A critical revision of the genus Eucalyptus (published in 8 volumes 1903 - 1933). Maiden was the inaugural Curator of the Technological, Industrial and Sanitary Museum (later Technological Museum) from 1880 to 1896. He then became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney and New South Wales Government Botanist, where he founded the National Herbarium of New South Wales. Maiden took an active role in the local scientific societies, serving as President for the Linnean and Royal Societies of New South Wales.
