Summary
Roger Hawken MIEAust, was Professor of Engineering, University of Queensland from 1916 until 1947. He served as a civil engineer in New South Wales, Federal Malay States and Queensland. He also lectured at the Ballarat School of Mine and the University of Sydney. Hawken was a co-founder of the Institution of Engineers, Australia (1919), the first chairman of its Brisbane division (1919), its President in 1923 and a councillor. He was the instigator of the compulsory registration of consulting engineers. Hawken worked on the initial design of the Sydney harbour bridge (which was later aborted) and researched widely in the areas of hydrology, earth pressure, and column design.
The Hawken Engineering Building, University of Queensland; Hawken Drive, St Lucia; and the Hawken Address, an annual oration presented by the Queensland division of the Institution of Engineers, are all named in his honour.
