Summary

Charles Lambie was the first full-time professor of medicine in Australia, being Bosch Professor at the University of Sydney from 1930 to 1957. His teaching had a profound influence on the discipline with nearly 20 graduates from his School also becoming Professors of Medicine at Australian universities. Lambie's principal research interests related to diabetes: he was the first in Europe to use insulin for the treatment of this disease. His major publication, written with Jean Armytage, was Clinical diagnostic methods, or the examination of patients (1947-1948) and embodied his belief in the need for a complete history and physical examination of the patient. He was a advocate of a liberal education encompassing sciences and the humanities. In 1931 he proposed the establishment of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and was a founding Fellow in 1938.
