Summary

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment was established in 1996. The Department took control of the functions previously carried out by the Department of Agriculture, Energy and Minerals and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

In December 2002 the Department was split into two separate entities: The Department of Sustainability and Environment and The Department of Primary Industries.

From their Web site, June 2002: "The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is responsible for the integrated management of Victoria's natural resource base, including land identification, resource development and utilisation and the protection, conservation and management of Victoria's natural environment."
