Summary

Previously the Department of Environment, Sport and Territories, the Department of Environment was established on 9 October 1997. The Department existed for just over a year and was responsible for the control of various agencies including the Bureau of Meteorology, Antarctic Division, Environment Protection Authority, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Australian Heritage Commission. The Department was replaced by the Department of the Environment and Heritage on 21 October 1998.
