Abstract

The Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland was established by The Professional Engineers Act 1929. In spite of the intensive efforts by the Institution of Engineers Australia in promoting statutory registration of the profession during its first decade (1919-1929), the Queensland legislation was, and remains, the only broadly based registration Act in Australia. From its inception the Board had consisted of six members, all professional engineers, with three members nominated by the Minister of Public Works and three members elected by the registered professional engineers of Queensland. The Professional Engineers Act 2002 came into effect on 1 January 2003 and restructured the Board to include representatives from consumers, law and construction. The paper outlines the development of the legislation over the years, discusses the progress of registration, and provides a list of engineers who served the people of Queensland on the Board during its first 72 years. There were 51 Board members in this period, including those who deputized during the absence of others. It is clear that many Board members have given service to the public and the profession far beyond the ordinary.
