Abstract: The paper traces the history of the involvement of the Commonwealth in the development and maintenance of the National road network. Our road network is considered to be part of our national engineering heritage. The paper argues that more attention needs to be given to its heritage aspects by extending the IEAust Australian Historic Engineering Plaquing Programme in line with the documentation practice adopted in establishing the Historic American Engineering Record.
