Description: The first papers on essential oils from the leaf of Eucalyptus trees, published by Bosisto and Osborne in the early 1860s, concerned only the yields, physical properties and uses of eucalyptus oils (see July issue, p. 28). This article summarises subsequent pioneering work in the late 1800s on the isolation, characterisation and structure determination of three important monoterpenes found in eucalyptus oils.
